During the term, 65 Year 9 and 10 Italian students had the wonderful opportunity to visit the Calabria Club in Bulla, where they experienced a rich and authentic insight into Italian culture, traditions and community life. From the moment they arrived, the students' enthusiasm and positivity were palpable. They eagerly embraced the opportunity to learn more about one of Melbourne's most treasured Italian community organisations and thoroughly enjoyed this memorable day out.

The Calabria Club has a proud and remarkable history, having recently celebrated its 80th anniversary. Established in 1946 by Italian migrants from the southern region of Calabria, the Club continues to play an important role in preserving Italian traditions and bringing generations together. Students were fascinated to learn about the Club's origins and the significant contribution Italian migrants have made to Australia's multicultural society.

One of the highlights of the day was meeting the passionate and dedicated volunteers, many of whom are grandparents who continue to devote their time to maintaining the Club and its traditions. Their warmth, hospitality and pride in sharing their culture provided students with a truly memorable experience. The Italian grandparents organised four engaging activities for our students to participate in. Students enjoyed playing bocce, soccer, traditional Italian card games and making fresh pasta from scratch. The pasta-making workshop was a particular highlight, with students learning the art of creating fettuccine, spaghetti, ravioli and gnocchi by hand. This authentic experience allowed students to appreciate the skill, patience and passion that underpin traditional Italian cooking.

Students also learned about the many celebrations and events hosted by the Club, including weddings, feast day celebrations, name day festivities and the popular Friday and Saturday evening dinners that bring families and friends together to enjoy good food and company.

The excursion provided students with a glimpse into everyday Italian life and culture. They explored the traditions of Calabria, a beautiful region in southern Italy renowned for its strong family values, rich history and exceptional cuisine. Students particularly enjoyed learning about the importance of food in Italian culture and were delighted to experience some of the exquisite flavours and culinary traditions that have been passed down through generations.

Following their pasta-making session, students indulged in a delicious homemade pasta lunch served with a delectable Napoletana sauce. The feast continued with scrumptious Margherita and Capricciosa pizzas, giving students the opportunity to savour authentic Italian cuisine in a warm and welcoming environment.

Experiences such as these allow students to see language come alive beyond the classroom and deepen their appreciation of the people, traditions and stories that shape Italian culture. They also provide invaluable opportunities for students to connect language learning with real-life cultural experiences and community engagement.

We thank the Calabria Club community for their generous hospitality, enthusiasm and commitment to preserving Italian traditions for future generations.
