Marking a realisation of a lifelong dream, Kolbe staff member and author Laura Roso has published her debut novel “Race Against Ace”. As the Director of Performing Arts, Laura has been an inspiring figure for many students, and now she has added "published author" to her impressive list of accomplishments.

Dreaming of writing a book since the age of 12, Laura’s inspiration for “Race Against Ace” came at a pivotal moment in her life. When her father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, she turned to writing as a form of solace. The experience not only helped her cope with the heartbreak but also became a creative outlet to transform her emotions into storytelling. "It was an escape during difficult times," she shares, emphasising the special connection her father holds within the narrative.

The novel tells the story of Billy Gronbeck, a compassionate boy grappling with his father's illness while navigating the complexities of school life. Laura's experiences as a drama teacher at Kolbe significantly influenced the character development and themes within the book. "Seeing students face challenges helps shape my storytelling," she explains. Through Billy's journey, Laura aims to convey important messages about managing emotions, the importance of friendship, and the value of imperfection.

The response to “Race Against Ace” has been overwhelmingly positive. Staff and students have expressed pride and excitement about her achievement. "It’s wonderful to see the community rallying around the book," she shares, noting the thoughtful discussions it has sparked among students. The book addresses complex issues like bullying and mental health, encouraging readers to seek help and understand the intricacies of their choices.

Roso balances her dual role as an educator and an author by dedicating time to her writing during school holidays. The process of publishing the book has not only been creatively fulfilling but has also served as a source of inspiration for her students. With plans for a sequel already in motion, Laura is committed to continuing her storytelling journey, aspiring to engage reluctant readers with themes that resonate deeply with them.

Looking ahead, Laura is excited for upcoming events at Kolbe, where she will discuss her writing journey and insights during Book Week. For her, the experience of publishing “Race Against Ace” has been nothing short of transformative. "Every child should feel empowered to share their stories," she said, hoping to inspire young writers to pursue their own dreams, just as she did.

With “Race Against Ace”, Laura Roso not only checks off a bucket list dream but also lays the groundwork for a future filled with storytelling, creativity, and connection—both in the classroom and beyond.
