Friday 30 January marked a significant milestone for our College community as we celebrated the first day of our brand new St Catherine of Bologna Campus (Mickleham). The day was made even more special by a traditional Smoking Ceremony, warmly attended by students, parents and staff.

The ceremony was led by Pellyan - the son of Murrundidni, a respected Wurundjeri Elder and direct descendant of the renowned Elder and artist William Barak. As the smoke drifted through the air, it symbolised cleansing and the welcoming of positive energy for the year ahead. Not only was this a celebration of new beginnings, it was also an acknowledgement of Country, respecting the traditional custodians of the land.

The deep, resonant sound of the didgeridoo echoed through the grounds commencing the ceremony. Pellyan shared his knowledge of the land, and students learned and sang a special Indigenous song, connecting them to the rich cultural heritage of the land. First-day jitters were put aside as some students bravely volunteered to read a special prayer.

The Smoking Ceremony was a wonderful way to begin our school year, bringing our community together, allowing us to honour Indigenous traditions, and set a tone of respect, unity, and hope for the future.
