Child Safe Standards 7 and 8

As Kolbe Catholic College continues its “11 Months 11 Standards” campaign to raise awareness within the school community around the safety of children and young people, our focus for this newsletter is around Child Safe Standards 7 and 8.

Child Safe Standard 7: Processes for complaints and concerns are child focused.

This Standard focuses on ensuring that Kolbe Catholic College’s processes for handling complaints and concerns are child-focused, accessible, and culturally safe.

Kolbe Catholic College aims to meet the requirements of this Standard, by having:

  • Complaints Handling Policy and Procedures is publicly available on the school website.
  • Child-friendly “raising a concern” process and poster on display in prominent areas of the school.
  • Student Senate members being inducted as Child Safety Officers for the students of Kolbe Catholic College.
  • Students, staff and volunteers receive ongoing training and support to identify inappropriate behaviour and indicators of abuse and escalate concerns.
  • Staff receive training to respond to complaints in ways that respect cultural needs, individual circumstances, and the diverse backgrounds of students and families.

Child Safe Standard 8: Staff and volunteers are equipped with the knowledge, skills and awareness to keep children and young people safe through ongoing education and training.

This Standard focuses on ensuring that ongoing training and professional learning is provided to staff and volunteers to help understand their responsibilities, stay up to date with best practices, and feel confident in keeping children safe.

Kolbe Catholic College aims to meet the requirements of this Standard, by having:

  • Mandatory child safety training for all staff and relevant third parties on induction to the site, with annual refreshers.
  • Professional development concerning child-safe standards is delivered to staff throughout the year.
  • Volunteers are provided with key policies, simple reporting guides, and contact points for raising concerns.
  • “Child Safety” is a standing agenda item all staff, Leadership Team and School Advisory Council meetings and school newsletters.
  • Visual aids placed in common areas of the school where staff and volunteers can access further education and information into child safety.
