27 AUG 2026 Celebrating Language, Culture and Community

From Monday 3 August to Friday 7 August, Kolbe Catholic College came alive with the sights, sounds and flavours of the world as students and staff celebrated another highly successful Languages Week. The week provided wonderful opportunities for our school community to embrace linguistic diversity, explore different cultures and discover the many benefits of learning another language.

We officially launched Languages Week with an inspiring presentation from acclaimed Australian author Archimede Fusillo, whose visit captivated students from beginning to end. The son of migrant parents from Basilicata, Italy, Archimede shared heartfelt stories about his Italian upbringing and the family traditions that shaped his identity and inspired his successful writing career.

Archimede spoke passionately about the importance of learning languages and how speaking Italian has opened countless doors throughout his life. One particularly memorable story was about travelling to Italy after the publication of his novels. Because he spoke Italian fluently, the publishers of Ferrari Magazine, who sponsored his work during his visit, provided him with a Ferrari company car to travel around Milan—a remarkable reminder of the unexpected opportunities that language learning can bring.

His message to students was both simple and inspiring:"If you are thinking about learning another language, do it. You never know where it will take you or the opportunities it may create." Students were fascinated to learn about Archimede's impressive literary achievements. His debut novel, Sparring with Shadows, was published on 1 October 1997, launching a successful writing career. They were equally excited to hear that one of his most celebrated novels, The Dons, has been adapted into a feature film titled Nonno, which is eagerly awaiting its release.

Throughout the week, students immersed themselves in a wide range of engaging cultural activities organised by the Languages Department. Arabic students enjoyed learning the traditional strategy game Twala, participated in Arabic board games and watched films that celebrated the richness of Arabic language and culture. Italian classes also enjoyed Italian-language films that further enhanced their appreciation of Italian life and traditions.

One of the highlights of the week was the Year 9 excursion to the Calabria Club, where students experienced authentic Italian culture through the eyes of the local community. Under the guidance of a wonderful 90-year-old nonna, students learned the art of making fresh pasta before enjoying traditional Italian card games, soccer and bocce with the enthusiastic and passionate nonni, who generously shared their stories, skills and hospitality. The day concluded with a delicious Italian feast featuring pasta, pizza and gelato, the much-loved staples of Italian cuisine — which students thoroughly enjoyed.

Lunchtimes throughout Languages Week were equally vibrant, with students enthusiastically participating in a variety of cultural activities, including:

• Karaoke in different languages
• Arabic board games
• Italian Carnevale mask making
• Dessert tasting, featuring traditional tiramisù
• Languages Bingo

These activities encouraged students to step outside their comfort zones, celebrate cultural diversity and experience the joy that language learning brings.

Languages Week continues to be one of the most anticipated events on the Kolbe Catholic College calendar. It reminds us that learning another language is not simply about words and grammar — it is about building connections, embracing different cultures and opening doors to exciting opportunities around the world.

A heartfelt thank you to all our dedicated Languages teachers and support staff who worked tirelessly to organise such an engaging and memorable week. We also extend our sincere appreciation to every student who participated with enthusiasm, curiosity and respect. Your energy and willingness to embrace new experiences made this year's celebration truly special.
