From Monday 24 August to Friday 4 September, the staff and Year 7 students at Kolbe’s St Catherine campus celebrated Book Week. It was an exciting two weeks which included events that inspired creativity, fostered engagement with the school community, and championed literacy for both students and staff.
To kick off Book Week, on Wednesday 26 August, we were lucky to have an author visit from a well-beloved former staff member Laura Roso, who wrote ‘Race Against Ace’. She spoke to the Year 7 cohort about her background, her journey as an author, and spread a wonderful message for students to "block out the noise" and repeated the inspiring quote to “Dream big! Remember, anything is possible”. The students were engaged throughout the talk, asking questions and multiple students borrowed ‘Race Against Ace’ from the library immediately after the session!
The main event of Book Week, Dress Up Day, was celebrated on Wednesday 2 September. It was an overwhelmingly successful day, with lots of students and staff members taking part in dressing up as fictional story characters. Everyone got to show off their amazing costumes during the parade, where an audience of students that did not dress up or chose not to take part in the parade still got involved by cheering on their peers as they walked the walk down our makeshift runway to music and cheers.
Also on Wednesday, the staff at St Catherine gathered in the library during Recess to partake in a Paint Your Own Sugar Cookie morning tea activity. Where each staff member, using food colouring, painted a design that was inspired by their favourite book. It was great to see staff members in costume decorating, guessing each other's books and enjoying eating their painted masterpieces on sugar cookies!
To celebrate Book Week, certificates and prizes were awarded to those whose costumes were standouts, students who were top library borrowers, and to the most creative submissions for the Book Cover Design Competition (where students could design and colour a new book cover for an existing book). Congratulations again to all the awarded winners listed:
