On Wednesday 3 August, the Year 12 Chemistry Students went on an excursion to the Victorian Space Science Centre at Strathmore High School. While there, they investigated acetyl salicylic acid, the active ingredient in aspirin.
The class broke up into teams and analysed commercial aspirin to verify the identity of the tablets and using infrared spectroscopy. They also used UV-visible spectroscopy and high performance liquid chromatography to determine the amount of aspirin present in the tablets.
It was extremely valuable to get hands on experience with the techniques covered in the Year 12 study design.
