Term 2 has been a vibrant and creative one across the Arts Department, with students in Visual Art, Visual Communication Design, and Media engaging in a wide range of learning. In Year 7 Visual Art, students completed their semester with a focus on The Australian Landscape. They explored native animals and developed skills in sculpture by creating their own blue-tongued lizards. While Year 10 Photography students experimented with the art of drawing with light, producing striking and imaginative photographs that truly showcase their creativity and flair for visual storytelling.

Year 10 Visual Art students visited the Heide Museum of Modern Art in Heidelberg as part of a hands-on practical and experiential component of their exam revision. Their excursion included a guided tour of the sculpture park followed by a hands-on sculptural activity in the museum’s dedicated education space.

A highlight for Year 11 and 12 Art Creative Practice students was their visit to the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA). They viewed the first major solo exhibition by Greek-Australian artist Tina Stefanou, known for her experimental work across performance, film, sound, sculpture, and socially engaged practice. Students took part in an artist talk with gallery educators and collaboratively created a sound sculpture in the gallery foyer. This experience gave students valuable insight into the importance of curating a cohesive body of work, an essential element of their studies. In the afternoon, senior students visited the National Gallery of Victoria’s general collection to explore how artworks are curated by aesthetic themes and historical periods. This provided inspiration for their own creative practice and documentation processes.

Featured are images from both excursions, along with some works in progress by Patrick Alphonso, Chanel Kako and Nathaniel Joaquim Carvalho Year 10 Art students and photographs by Year 10 Photography. Stay tuned for details next term about our annual Art Exhibition in Term 4, where these impressive final pieces will be on display.
